As we wrap up National Water Safety Month, who better to school us on swimming and drowning prevention than five-time Olympic swimmer Dara Torres?! She recently teamed up with Swim Today to kick off swim season and encourage parents to have their children try swimming as a competitive sport.
Not only is Dara a professional swimmer, but she’s transitioned to the role of swim mom these days and supports her own daughter in her various sporting activities. Please watch my interview below – and scroll to the bottom for more great info on where to start if you’d like to find a swim team for your kids where you live!
Here’s another great video that might motivate you or your children to get in the pool!
To find a pool or swim team near you simply log onto Swim Today’s website and type in your zip code!

Awesome interview! I think swimming is a good one to try for kids who aren’t necessarily interested in the ‘traditional’ sports too. My niece and nephew both tried it and my sister thought her son, who is more athletic, would really excel at it, but it turned out that her daughter was a natural.
One thing though… do people really throw up in the gutters?? Doesn’t that contaminate the pool? LOL

Wonderful interview and got to be honest not sure I could have kept swimming while I was pregnant myself, but still very inspiring.

I heart Dara Torres. She’s inspirational and wise. Thanks for this informative interview. My 6-year old FINALLY is getting excited about swimming. Maybe a team is in his future.

Great interview! I love Dara!
We love swimming and are going pretty much every day. It is a great physical activity and so much fun! I notice that my kids get so much better at swimming with each passing day. I would love to have one of them join a team, we shall see.

What a great interview! I watched it twice because Des interrupted the first time.
I hope this will be the summer of swimming for at least Scarlet. I know Des isn’t too young to start either so I don’t know what I’m waiting for.
Also, Scarlet is pretty sure that once she starts swimming, she’ll get a mermaid fin. How do I tell her the truth?

I love swimming for kids. My son did it for a bit and lost interest, but I’m glad he took lessons. Also, swimming during pregnancy was so great, made every ache and pain go away. Great interview.

I’ll have to show this to my daughter, I loved Dara on the Olympic teams especially when she made her last Olympic team and still showed the “kids” she still had it.

I never knew that parents didn’t think of swimming as a team sport. My brother and I were on the swim team from a young age, and it’s all about the team. He was far better than I (he even had talks about being an olympic hopeful at one point). The best thing is that even though I’m not a good swimmer, it’s wonderful to have the confidence as a parent to know that I can swim well enough in an emergency, and I remember enough of the training as a kid to know that I can reinforce any swim lessons we might get our kids. Plus, it’s a great way to keep kids active in the summer!
