It’s not easy being 5. (Photo Courtesy of: Priceless Photos by Melissa) |
Today my first born turns five years old. I knew it would happen one day…her growing up. But I didn’t expect the years to pass so quickly. And I didn’t think I would feel this…well…sappy.
Lila was such a blessing to Bob and I. We always wanted children, and never expected the difficulty we would have in conceiving. I am so thankful for his patience with me, as I slowly warmed up to the idea of in vitro. I was terrified of needles and fainted when giving blood. But boy…was she worth it…and the wait.

It’s amazing to see the changes in Lila this year. Physically the milestones are so visible. She’s lost the chubby ‘baby’ cheeks and grown more than a few inches. Her hair is so much longer, and her vocabulary exploding. My favorite new phrase is “mom, I just don’t trust Emy’s judgement.”. Yeah me either…she’s only 2!
She’s also conquered the tough task of snapping, and can finally swing by herself. She can even read short books. I am so proud watching her read to her sister, and swing alone outside on the swingset. It’s a testament to her perseverance and her independence. But I sometimes feel sad that she’s less reliant on me. Such a conundrum for a busy mom huh?
She used to sit on my lap every morning and cuddle, and I could carry her to bed every night for an extra snuggle. Now at 42 pounds I can barely lift her, and it’s rare that she climbs into my lap. When her friends come over she used to ask me to play with them, now they’d rather play alone. Don’t get me wrong, I love the time to myself, but sometimes I miss being needed.
She’s also evolving into her own person now, with strong likes and dislikes. She loves books, art and helping with chores. I’ve never seen someone love washing windows as much as Lila! She also loves to sing and has asked to learn to play the piano. It’s so much fun to watch her become herself, and see her excel and struggle. I’m curious to see if she’ll always love dresses. Or will she play sports, or star in a school play? And will she continue to love to draw? Her talent still amazes me.

Motherhood in all its chaos is such an amazing gift. It’s such a blessing to be able to raise my girls, and spend so much time with them. I am so grateful everyday for the light and love they have brought to our lives, and hope Lila knows how much she brightens my every day.
So Happy Birthday sweet girl! Though you are a ‘big girl’ as you say…I will still always call you my baby.
