I want little girls to grow up and know that if they put their mind to it, they can do anything.” – Jen Welter, Intern Coach for the Arizona Cardinals
It was announced this week that Jen Welter will join the Arizona Cardinals as an intern coach. She is believed to be the first woman to be given the title coach ever in the National Football League. Welter is only the second woman to be named a coach in a major men’s professional league, as Becky Hammon joined the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach in 2014. And while her position as an intern coach for six weeks isn’t full time or even permanent, it’s a step; one small footprint with a very large impact.
Imagine what that must feel like – to be the first woman behind those closed doors? Football in this country isn’t just America’s favorite past time, it’s worshiped, loved, praised, analyzed, and adored. And it’s a place some girls could previously only dream of landing. But now Jen Welter has opened up the hallowed doors to this beloved league – and more importantly the conversation that women can and will succeed in professional football.

LOVE it… nice move by the CARDS, Wonder if they’ll keep her? I’d say there’s a 50-50 chance they could. this may sound bad but i hope they only give it to her if it’s deserved and not use it as a PR move. gotta think that would never happen since football is big business!!!

Congratulations to Jen Welter! I’ll definitely have to follow along to see how this all plays out. So many women love football too, so why deny the ability to be involved?
