This week I wrote an article for the parenting website Bundoo called 4 Fun Ways To Un-Spoil Your Kids This Holiday Season. You see…our kids are beyond spoiled, and I desperately wanted to clean out our toy boxes and closets, and donate some of our new and untouched toys. We are fortunate to have lots of friends and family who have showered us with lovely things for our girls, but now it’s our turn to give.
I wasn’t sure where to start though – food banks, Toys for Tots, or one of the many organizations that are working so hard during the holidays? So I asked my friend, Katy Meagher, a Television Producer for Neighbors for Neighbors to guide me.
Here’s what she wrote to me:
“The biggest problem in this country is hunger. The disparity between the haves and have-nots is huge. One in 5 children go hungry each day. Many families struggle to meet the most basic needs, which makes it impossible for them to afford the extra things so many of us take for granted during the holidays.
That’s where Neighbors 4 Neighbors comes in. For 22 years, we have been connecting those in need with those who can help. Our annual Adopt A Family 4 The Holidays program is a conduit, that puts families in need in direct contact with families who can help them. These families have been nominated by our Non-Profit Partners, many agencies you know and love, but who don’t have the ability to provide this connection for their clients.
There are a few ways to help:
- Choose a one on one adoption. Register on our website www.aaf.neighbors4neighbors.org . Browse through the 100 or so families still available for adoption. Choose your favorite and contact the family directly and unwrap hope for their holiday.
- You can also help by hosting a Toy or Gift Card Drive as part of Adopt A Family’s Operation Elf. New unwrapped toys and especially gift cards are a fantastic way to help. Gift cards allow the families to get the things they really want and often need.
- Lastly, you can make a donation directly to our website and we’ll get gift cards and give them to a family on your behalf.
No matter which way you choose, a family right here in South Florida will have a very happy holiday because of your gift! Also, don’t just think of us during the holidays, we help families and individuals all year long. Call us if you need help or have help to give…we’ll connect you with the resources right here that can help.
If you aren’t sure which way is best for you, give us a call at 305-597-4404 and we’ll walk you through it. You can also go to our main website at for more info too.”
Thanks to Katy for sharing the great work of Neighbors 4 Neighbors, and I hope some of you can help. Even a little can go a long way, and helping other families is a great lesson for our children. Happy Holidays!

I loved your post on how to unspoil your children during the holidays. I think teaching the importance of giving back is so great. I am definitely going to check out this program. Is it only for South Florida or do they have other branches in other locations?

This is incredible, girl. I am huge on holiday charity work – my big girl and I just did Feed My Starving Children and it was pretty much the greatest thing we’ve done all year. This looks like an equally amazing opportunity and I am so thankful you shared it!!

Yes it’s awesome and just what our family needs to put some perspective on our lives. Thanks as always for reading!

Going to need to check out your unspoil article now!
What a great idea! My kids just helped out with a canned food drive for my girl scout troop. We collected over 2700 cans! I was so pleased with how hard they worked and giving to and helping others made them feel so happy.

Love this! What an awesome program.
I regularly involve my girls in giving to charitable causes. I want them to have a heart for people… to eagerly and earnestly want to help. We donate clothes and toys but the food bank is my FAVOURITE charity to support.
Thanks for sharing.

I have always enjoyed adopting a family. Instead of dropping a new toy in a big collection box I can picture a specific little girl or boy having a great Christmas morning. It breaks my heart to think of all the kids right here in our neck of the woods going without – when so many of us have “too much”. Thanks for sharing all these ideas!

My pleasure – it is nice to be able to help one family get what they need. So fulfilling!
